How to Plan a Landscape for Easy Outdoors Entertaining

Outdoor entertaining can be a dream or a nightmare, depending on your landscape plan. You don’t really need the hassle of carrying out chairs and tables, ferrying uncooked food out to the barbeque plate by plate or finding that your drinks have lost their chill by the end of the evening. A little planning can turn the nightmare into a dream of delight.

Firstly, chairs and tables should be kept outdoors or on the deck where you are going to entertain. Then they will not need to be carried from indoors every time. Think comfort and add soft cushions and beanbags. Taking power out to your deck or landscape area will ensure that a small refrigerator can hold all the food and keep the drinks cold. You can play music outdoors without having to depend on battery power, too.

It will also make sure you have enough light to see that those steaks and sausages are cooking merrily and not turning to black cinders. Lights can be considered a safety feature too. Adequate lighting will prevent people from falling down steps or over a shrub they couldn’t see in the dark. It will also prevent them eating the bug that landed in their tomato sauce!

A sealed storage area can hold the special crockery and cutlery you keep just for entertaining - that will save more trips in and out of the kitchen. If you also install a sink and drainer, washing up can be done out on the deck so you don’t miss any of the good conversation.

A heater of some kind will chase away those evening chills and ensure you get optimum use from your entertainment area. There are many styles of patio heaters; gas, electricity or fossil fuel. A radiant heater is best because it warms the person rather than the surrounding air. Gas is clean and convenient, but can run out at inconvenient times. Fuel is good, but children must be watched around it.

Some form of mosquito control will probably be necessary and you can choose between coils, or citronella in its various forms. These may not be too good if the weather turns windy. Bug zappers are popular, but they don’t discriminate between mosquitoes and ‘good’ bugs. Carbon dioxide traps are excellent but expensive. They work by mimicking human breath that attracts mosquitoes. There are also various lotions and potions that can be rubbed, sprayed on from a bottle or jar or electronic devices that emit a high-pitched whine that sends those mosquitoes packing.
