How to Incorporate Colorful Plants in Your Design

There are many ways of achieving color in your garden. It doesn’t have to be through annuals or even perennials. Many plants have striking foliage or bark. Trees often have glorious fall color, shrubs may have beautiful leaves while the blades of certain grasses glow with reds, blues or pinks.

Once you decide exactly where you want that spot of extra color, you can haunt the nurseries to find just the right plant to provide it. You may even decide on several choices and keep them in pots. Then you can change them around as each one comes into bloom, or when you feel like a change of color.

Vines can be trained to cover an old fence or shed that looks rather ugly and bare. They can climb up onto the patio or deck too, for a wall of living color. Most vines have brightly colored flowers. Just be careful that you provide a strong enough support for those that are prolific growers.

Of course the elements of your landscape design consist of more than garden and shed. You may have a large area with a gazebo, a pond or swimming pool, along with outdoor shower and changing rooms. Or you could have extensive lawn that you want to brighten with color. Plants kept in pots - at least for a while - will help you in deciding just the right kind of look for your garden design.

When you are sure of your design, then take the plants out of the pots and plant them in their new home. Making sure the soil is as good as it can be will also ensure that your plants bloom and grow properly, giving you plenty of color.

Make sure taller plants are at the back of the area with shorter ones in the front, otherwise all that lovely color will be wasted, growing where it cannot be seen. Your own tastes will dictate what sort of color you grow in your garden. You may adore a wild riot of summer bulbs and annuals, or your might be happier with the subtle colors of natives and grasses. Whatever you choose, go with your heart and plant what you like best.

There is no need to grow the same things as your neighbors, either. Subscribing to plant catalogues will soon inform you of new beauties to be had and they are often at quite reasonable prices. Sometimes local nurseries only stock the most popular plants. To grow something different you often need to venture further afield.
