How to Find a Landscape Style that Suits Your Life and Home
Before you begin on any landscaping activity, think about your lifestyle and see if your plans actually fit in with it. If you work outside the home in a full-time job, then you may not want a garden with lots of annuals that take a great deal of work to maintain. Unless your idea of heaven is to spend all your leisure hours working in the garden you’ll need to create a landscape that is low maintenance.
If you have children who need a good deal of playing space, or if you love to entertain frequently with barbeques, then cleared lawn space would be more important to your needs than flowerbeds or shrubs dotting the lawn. That’s not to say you shouldn’t have some, but remember to leave plenty of walk/play space.
Another consideration is your climate. Your landscaping plans need to fit in with the environment; if your winter brings snow and howling blizzards, then tropical trees and shrubs will not grow successfully. If your climate is hot and dry, then those trees and plants that need lots of water and a moist atmosphere to grow, will be best left in the nursery. Not all nurseries stock appropriate plants for the area they are in. Also, there are some mini-climates within the environment where those plants will grow with a modicum of success, but unless you have one, then you’ll have no luck.
You home will play a big part in the type of landscape you choose. If your home is a two or three storey one with large grounds, then you can go in for much taller, or spreading trees without dwarfing it. In fact, all small trees would look out of place. Likewise, to plant huge trees around a home that is small, will not suit it at all. You need to create a well-balanced plan with trees that do not dwarf your home or block.
Older couples that cannot manage much in the way of gardening or even lawn mowing don’t need to give up their plans of an attractive outdoor area. They can reduce the amount of work by adding paved areas with plants in boxes; a fishpond or swimming poll to take up the lawn space, or simply laying down plastic covered with pebbles and a few shrubs.
Finding the right landscape plan to suit your lifestyle and home should not be difficult. There are many free plans online and many more in various books and magazines.
