How to Create an English Style Landscape

English style landscapes are famed for their romantic appeal. Softly curving pathways lead through a variety of delightfully pretty and lush flora such as granny’s bonnets, delphiniums, poppies and forget-me-nots. Pink and white roses scramble over white painted picket fences or pergolas while majestic trees tower over the whole, creating areas of deep shade where violets and other shade-lovers grow in profusion.

Then there is the larger garden with stately topiary, acres of lush lawns and formal garden beds carefully filled with just the right mix of stately flowers. Statues are of stone and often feature naked cherubs or rather ugly gargoyles or lions’ faces. Cement paths lead in a straight line to a rectangular pool with concrete sides and mostly it is all covered with some kind of algae or moss that deepens the natural gray to a darker shade. In these formal gardens there is not a leaf or a petal out of place. Of course, gardeners are employed to keep everything spick and span.

To create your own piece of English landscaping, you will need plenty of water and shade. While shade can be created artificially until trees grow tall enough, water may be a problem, as it seems that half the country is in drought while the other half suffers flooding.

However, many flowers that first originated in England are available almost worldwide and some have been hybridized to make them more suited to other climates. So your English style landscape will require any English type flowers you can get. Moreover, white painted picket fences with those old-fashioned rambling roses, sweet peas, or other climber scrambling over them will add to the English look.

If you are lucky enough to have a bank of some kind in your landscaped area, build up a wall of stone against it and grow plants that will fall over it in delightful profusion. A mulched or gravel pathway along the base, with more flowers and low shrubs gracefully brushing the edges will add extra appeal.

Unless you are going for the formal look, stay away from straight lines in pathways and planting. Flowerbeds should be curving; rounded or oval, or any other shape that pleases you so long as it is not straight-sided. Fill the whole yard with a colorful assortment of flowers, shrubs and low bushes. Allow the meandering path to take you on a surprise tour, leading to statues or a water-feature or birdbath that cannot be seen from the starting point.

Furnish hidden arbors with rustic seats of stone or teak, with honeysuckle or roses twining over the backs and into trees nearby. A gazebo, bridge or rustic wooden fencing can also part of the English landscape design.
