Creating an Asian Style Landscape
An Asian style landscape will fit into a very small or a very large area, so no matter what your plot is like, you can go ahead and choose an Asian theme with confidence. Water is a feature of most Asian style gardens, but if you live in a dry area, you can choose to represent this with sand or fine gravel. With the addition of a simple rock, mossy log or stone lantern, this would then become a Zen garden. Water ripples are achieved by raking the sand or gravel into a pattern similar to water swirls. Zen gardens have a simplicity that inspires serenity in the viewer.
If you are able to create a lovely pool in your landscape design, then a curved wooden or stone bridge would be just the thing to add for an Asian theme. Goldfish or koi in the water, along with special plants will enhance the illusion, while bamboo also plays a significant part. A water feature made of stone and bamboo may be an alternative to a pond. With the addition of a stone statue of a pagoda or lantern your Asian theme is well on its way to completion.
Cherry trees along with their amazing blossom, lotus for the pond, oriental lilies, and maples are all components of the Asian garden, while pines and junipers are great for they don’t mind hotter weather and can be shaped easily into bonsai-like topiary. Many are suited to that ‘cloud’ shape that is a classical technique of pruning in many Asian gardens. Camellias and Acers are also traditional trees for Asian gardens.
Asian style gardens are said to be created as ‘nature in miniature form’ so don’t need to be formal. Instead, they are often rather bare looking, with much symbolism attached to the elements that are included. It is not necessary to understand all the symbolism to enjoy creating an Asian landscape.
Japanese gardens have two main types; the hilly garden with water and the flat land garden without water. Traditionally the hill and pond style was the more popular, with water adding a sense of coolness to the cities where the gardens were created. Bridges were a natural outcome of ponds and streams to allow people access to other parts of the gardens.
Flat, dry gardens became more popular with the introduction of tearooms and the tea making ceremony. Created to avoid artificiality and enhance a quiet spirit, the tearooms are approached through the teagarden that features stepping-stones, tree clusters and lanterns.
